Here we are going to explore the trend of WFH set ups and why this will boost your editing photography skills. Does not matter if you are a wedding photographer, or you have photography as a hobby, even if you are a headshot photographer, you know how important is to relay in the best tools to deliver the best results.

WFH set up

The concept of working from home (WFH) has evolved from a rare perk to a widespread practice. Fueled by technological advancements and accelerated by global events, remote work is now a standard in various industries. This blog delves into the essentials of a WFH setup, the benefits it offers, and how it can enhance productivity. ANd also, how as a photographers we can embrace this practice and take it several steps beyond.

Essentials for a Successful Setup for Photographers

1. Workspace

  • Dedicated Area: Designate a specific area in your home solely for work. This separation helps maintain a clear boundary between personal and professional life, this is also perfect for us as a photographers since some days or even weeks straight it is good for us to have clear where to rest and where to work.
  • Ergonomic Furniture: Invest in an ergonomic chair and desk to ensure comfort and prevent physical strain, since when we are busy, we.are.busy, we must be comfortable.

2. Technology

  • Computer/Laptop: A reliable computer or laptop is crucial for most remote work tasks, in this case I am using a MacBook Pro M4 14” 48gb
  • High-Speed Internet: Ensure you have a stable, high-speed internet connection to support video conferencing and large file transfers, and trust me, sometimes we are going to have files that will take more than one day to transfer.
  • Monitor: An external monitor can increase screen space and reduce eye strain. In this case I am using the 27” 4K Asus ProArt 
  • Peripherals: Equip yourself with a good keyboard in this case I am using the Magic Keyboard from Apple, why? well, since it is the closest to my MacBook keyboard, so I don’t have to adapt everytime I use one of them, my mouse is the Logitech MX Master 3S, why? well since I develop my pictures in Lightroom first, the side scroll works a lot, also, you can set up a few gestures that will help your workflow, as Docking station I use the Toben One Docking Station, right now I have the Asus ProArt connected, the ElGato Neo Stream dock, one La Cie Hard Drive and one Marshall Emberton II Speaker. So far, it is working great, no lagging, and the heat is pretty low for the amount of data it is receiving daily.

3. Software

  • Collaboration Tools: Platforms, Google Teams, and Zoom facilitate communication and teamwork and will give you a huge control amount on your communication with clients and vendors.
  • Cloud Storage: Services like Google Drive and Dropbox allow for easy file sharing and access. each one have its perks, I am using Google Drive, however, I love the Dropbox feature when you can send a link to other to use your storage instead of theirs.

4. Environment

  • Lighting: Good natural lighting and/or a desk lamp helps reduce eye strain and improve focus, I use a generic brand desk light, that so far has working great, no sweat providing great contrast and brightness.
  • Noise Control: Noise-canceling headphones or a quiet environment can minimize distractions, right now I am using the AirPods 2nd Gen, this is because I find uncomfortable the traditional headphones.
  • Personal Touches: Add artwork, personal items that will provide motivation, or good memories, or more light if you want to, goal is an inviting and stress-free workspace.

5. Health and Wellness

  • Break Schedule: Regular breaks to stretch and rest your eyes are essential to maintain health and productivity.
  • Hydration and Snacks: Keep water and healthy snacks within reach to stay energized throughout the day.
  • A good music selection, this is completely up to you and trust me, music will enhance your productivity.

The work-from-home was always there for us the photographers, we know what is like to stay at home with the uncertainty of the next month booking. Now, by setting up a functional and comfortable home office, leveraging the right technology, and acknowledging that our time at home is as important as our time out form home, you can enhance productivity and achieve a better work-life balance.
